Mixing up your exercise routine is always fun and using a weighted hula hoop is a great way to add variety to your workouts!

The perfect complement to your regular training, it challenges a range of muscles from your core to your glutes, supports your cardiovascular fitness, and burns a bunch of calories to help you lose weight.

In fact, a 2015 study of 13 women using a weighted hula hoop found that they lost an impressive average of 1.4 inches from around their waist in just 6 weeks!

But picking the perfect hoop for your needs isn’t always easy, particularly if you’re just getting started and don’t know quite what to look for.

So I’ve designed this guide to help, and included the 10 best weighted hula hoops available right now and the reasons I recommend them.

But before we get to those, let’s take a look at the things to consider before making your choice.

Best Weighted Hula Hoops

What to Look for in a Weighted Hula Hoop

First, think about where you will be using your hoop.

If it’s for home use, portability isn’t really an issue and you’ll be able to store it vertically in any narrow space.

But if you intend to take your hoop with you when traveling or for trips to the park, look for one that will break down into sections so that it’s easy to carry.

Other things to think about include:

#1: Size

The hoops in this guide range from 36 to 43 inches in diameter.

In general, I’d recommend going for a larger hoop if you’re a beginner and only considering a smaller one if you have a bit more experience.

A larger hoop will rotate more slowly, so it’s easier to move your body quickly enough to keep it going.

Alternatively, consider an adjustable hoop.

You can start with it at its largest setting, then reduce its size over time as you perfect your technique.

#2: Weight

The best weighted hula hoop if you’re just getting started should weigh between 1 and 2 pounds.

Heavier hoops can be difficult to manage if you haven’t mastered the movement pattern required to keep them rotating.

Not only can this be frustrating, but it can lead to bruising, too!

Some adjustable hoops allow you to change the weight as well as the diameter, so – again – these can be a good choice if you want a hoop that you can adapt as your skills develop.

#3: Materials

Ensure that the hoop you choose is made from a tough material like ABS plastic that won’t break or crack as you learn to use it.

If you’re a newbie, consider a hoop with foam padding, as this will protect you from bruising.

#1. Best Weighted Hula Hoop with Acupressure – Sports Hoop Acu Hoop

Materials: Foam, Plastic, Size: 40 inches, Weight: 3.8 lbs, Adjustable: No

Sports Hoop Weighted Hula Hoop, ACU Hoop
ProsCons
Easy to storeSomewhat pricey
Ideal for travelingRidges may be uncomfortable for beginners
Durable

Ideal for more advanced users, the ACU Hoop from Sports Hoop features the brand’s patented wavy-ridged design.

This is meant to give a little extra stimulation to your core muscles and help you tone them faster!

Whilst there’s no evidence that this design is any more beneficial than a regular hoop, this model certainly feels comfortable to use and is generously padded with soft foam to protect you from bruising.

It comes apart into 8 small sections for transportation and is easy to reassemble when it’s time to exercise!

#2. Most Unique Weighted Hula Hoop – RR ROUND RICH DESIGN Wooden Exercise Hoop

Materials: Wood, Size: 36 inches, Weight: 4 lbs, Adjustable: No

RR ROUND RICH DESIGN Wooden Hula Weighted Exercise Hoop for Fitness
ProsCons
Makes a pleasant sound Takes a lot of practice to master
Sustainable Expensive
2 spare balls providedNot easy to safely stop the hoop rotating!

I’ll admit – I found this tough to use at first because the beads don’t form a rigid circle as they do with traditional hoops.

But once I got it going it was fun to use, and I found the noise it makes as it rotates very therapeutic!

The hand-polished beads have a high-quality look and feel and come with a handy drawstring bag, so the hoop is easy to take with you when traveling.

#3. Best Weighted Hula Hoop for All Levels – GATE FITNESS Exercise Hoop

Materials: Foam, Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), Size: 34 to 40 inches, Weight: 3.1 lbs Max, Adjustable: Yes

GATE FITNESS Weighted Hula Hoop
ProsCons
Ideal for beginners through to pros, with training poster providedFoam could be more durable
Comfortably paddedAssembly can be tricky
Comes with a good quality carry bag

This brightly colored hoop from Gate Fitness can be used with all eight sections when you get started, giving you a generous diameter of 40 inches.

As you progress, you can remove a section, bringing the diameter down to a more challenging 34 inches and dropping the weight to 2.7 lbs.

The 1-click system for reassembly is pretty straightforward, although I did find it required quite a bit of strength to snap the pieces together.

#4. Best Weighted Hula Hoop for Beginners – Spinsterz Hoop

Materials: 3/4″ 160 PSI Polyethylene, Size: 36, 38, or 42 inches, Weight: 1.3 to 1.5 lbs, Adjustable: No

Spinsterz Beginner Hoop
ProsCons
Lots of colors availablePricey
Can be coiled for storage and transportationTape isn’t very durable
Lifetime warranty

The Spinsterz Hoop comes in three different sizes, with the manufacturer recommending the 38-inch model if you have an average body size and the 42-inch hoop for plus sizes.

It’s also among the most lightweight in this guide, making it great for getting your body accustomed to the movement needed to keep it rotating before progressing to a heavier model.

Although it’s not adjustable, it has a detachment point that allows you to coil it to a small size, so it’s perfect for travel or throwing in your gym bag.

#5. Best Weighted Hula Hoop on a Budget – colorfarm Exercise Hoop

Materials: Stainless Steel, Foam Size: 36.5 inches, Weight: 2.38 lbs, Adjustable: Yes

colorfarm Weighted Fitness Exercise Hoop
ProsCons
Thick, soft foam for protectionCan be difficult to click the pieces together
Disassembles into 6 sections for portability
Feels robust and durable

If you are considering hooping but don’t want to spend a lot of money on a premium model, then you might want to check out this affordable hoop from colorfarm.

It has a stainless steel body that weighs 2.38 lbs, but you can adjust the weight by adding sand, rice, or steel balls to the inner tube (although you’ll need to purchase these separately).

The padding is nice and thick – much better than I expected at this point – and the hoop feels very sturdy once it’s assembled.

#6. Best Weighted Hula Hoop for a Fun Workout – Dumoyi Smart Fit Hoop

Materials: ABS Plastic, Size: Up to 43 inches, Weight: 3 lbs, Adjustable: Yes

Dumoyi Smart Weighted Fit Hoop
ProsCons
Easy to learnQuite noisy to use
Length of cord can be adjustedOccasionally pinches the skin
Comes with 3 spare massage heads

With massaging heads on the inner surface, this weighted hoop works a little differently from the others in this guide.

It is composed of a series of small links and has a soft weight bag attached, which fits into an inner track and is designed to smoothly glide around the hoop as you rotate your hips.

I found this lots of fun to use – and an easy technique to learn compared to regular hooping – but the weight got stuck a couple of times, which I imagine could get annoying with frequent use.

#7. Best Adjustable Weighted Hula Hoop – Bintiva Hoop

Materials: Foam, Plastic, Size: 38 inches, Weight: 3.3 to 5.5 lbs, Adjustable: Yes

Bintiva Weighted Hula Hoop
ProsCons
Lots of weight optionsNo carry bag
Weights come in a convenient caseDiameter is not adjustable
Very easy to adjust

This is a beautifully made hoop that you can adjust to 3.6 lbs, 3.9 lbs, 4.3 lbs, 4.6 lbs, 5lbs, or 5.3 lbs by inserting weights – and the good news is that they are all included!

The hoop is comfortably padded and has a high-quality, durable feel, plus it’s easy to disassemble into 6 pieces for travel.

The diameter is on the small side compared to the other hoops I’ve included here, so you may want to perfect your technique with a larger hoop before investing in this one.

#8. Best Weighted Hula Hoop for Travel – Hoopnotica Hoop

Materials: Not Stated, Size: 42 inches, Weight: 1.5 lbs, Adjustable: Yes

Hoopnotica Travel Hoop
ProsCons
Large, lightweight, and ideal for beginnersExpensive
Segments snap together easily
Eye-catching design

Whilst a few of the best weighted hula hoops featured here are suitable for traveling, this one is my favorite – it’s lightweight, disassembles easily, and has a handy strap to carry it with.

You can use all 6 segments to create a hoop with a generous 42-inch diameter or take out a section for a petite 37-inch hoop that weighs just 1.1 lbs.

The only downside is that it doesn’t come with any foam padding, but it’s so lightweight that you really won’t need it.

#9. Best Value for Money – Auoxer Fitness Weighted Hoop

Materials: ABS Plastic, NBR Foam Size: 38 inches, Weight: 2.25 lbs, Adjustable: Yes

Auoxer Fitness Weighted Hoop
ProsCons
Very comfortable to useNo carrying case
Easy to assemble/disassembleNot ideal for beginners
Comes with a free jump rope

This hoop has a small diameter and can be built with either 6, 7, or 8 sections.

This takes it from a maximum of 38 inches in diameter all the way down to 29 inches, making it ideal if you already have some hooping experience, or if you’re a petite user.

Padded with soft foam for comfort, it can be completely disassembled for travel.

#10. Best Weighted Hula Hoop Overall – Dynamis Fat Burning Hoop

Materials: Foam, Plastic, Size: 36 inches, Weight: 3.59 lbs, Adjustable: Yes

Dynamis Fat Burning Weighted Hula Hoop
ProsCons
Highly durableNo bag provided
Very well padded
Breaks down for travel or storage

This popular hoop from Dynamis ticked all the boxes for me and is heavy enough to provide a challenging workout once you’ve got the hang of using it.

If it’s a bit too much of a leap from a beginner’s hoop, you can opt to assemble it with just 7 sections to create a more lightweight version, although this will reduce the diameter to just 31 inches.

The foam layer is nice and thick – an important factor with a heavier hoop – whilst all parts are very well made, with a sturdy structure once assembled and solid connectors that feel designed to stand the test of time.

The 10 best Weighted Hula Hoops: Key Takeaways

It might take a little practice if you haven’t done it for years, but using a hula hoop is lots of fun, burns calories, and makes it easy to work a range of muscles.

I hope this guide has helped you pick the perfect hoop for your next workout and that you enjoy using it as part of your fitness routine.
