The Boulderthon 10K took an unexpected turn on Sunday morning when a freight train rolled across the course, forcing much of the lead pack to a full stop for more than two minutes.

Only the top two runners managed to cross before the barrier came down, and official results show a five-minute gap between second and third place. After second place crossed in 32:30, the third finisher arrived over five minutes later, confirming what one runner described online as โ€œan absolute nightmare.โ€

The incident was first reported on a Boulder community Reddit thread that quickly drew hundreds of comments.

โ€œBeing in the top 10, I had to weave in and out of runners from the 5K and half marathon for nearly the whole race,โ€ one participant wrote. โ€œThen, at 4.8 miles the entire front of the field (except for top two who got through before) had to stop for over two minutes to let a long cargo train pass through.โ€

Many runners and spectators called it a bizarre twist in a race already facing criticism for crowding, road closures, and environmental impact.

โ€œWe confirmed no trains would be runningโ€

In the same Reddit thread, the official Boulderthon account acknowledged the mistake, saying the team had โ€œconfirmed multiple times with the railway that no trains would be running during the race.โ€ Organizers promised to investigate the failure, adding that the responsibility ultimately falls on us.

Later comments from the account said Boulderthon planned to raise the issue directly with BNSF Railway, which operates the freight line running east of central Boulder. According to the cityโ€™s quiet zone map, active crossings remain at Pearl Parkway and Valmont Road, both along the marathonโ€™s route.

A BNSF spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but industry experts note that not all freight operations can be precisely scheduled, especially when unscheduled โ€œextraโ€ trains are dispatched. Still, several Boulder residents questioned why the course was designed to cross active rail lines in the first place.

More than just a train problem

While the freight delay grabbed headlines, runners raised broader concerns about race-day organization. Some said aid stations ran low on water, while others described tight merges where 10K leaders ran into slower participants from other distances.

โ€œIt was downright dangerous today,โ€ wrote one half marathoner. โ€œWater stations were out of cups, and the course was so narrow.โ€

Traffic detours also fueled local frustration. Dozens of commenters said they were trapped in their neighborhoods or spent up to half an hour rerouting around closures. One resident wrote, โ€œIt took me 45 minutes to get to Sprouts from Kalmia. It was awful.โ€ Another said, โ€œWe have races out here every week, and Iโ€™ve never had to wait for an escort out.โ€

Even outside the racecourse, the city felt gridlocked. โ€œIt disrupted life for the whole city,โ€ one commenter said. โ€œA new course would be best.โ€

Cleanup and community backlash

Boulderthonโ€™s organizers also faced criticism over litter along the route, a complaint echoed from last yearโ€™s event.

One user posted an image of discarded gel packets and cups, saying theyโ€™d collected trash โ€œin a three-mile segment of the course.โ€ Others called for stricter cleanup efforts and accountability from both runners and the race itself.

The raceโ€™s account responded that โ€œmultiple crews were sweeping the route for 24 hours after the finishโ€ and invited residents to report any missed areas.

Still, frustration lingered. Several Boulderites urged the city to reconsider approving large-scale races that shut down central corridors.

Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this article stated that several Boulderites urged the city to reconsider approving large-scale for-profit races, however, Boulderthon organizers have clarified that it is a non-profit organization

โ€œIt seems like $$$ buys these race promoters the rare place on Boulder streets,โ€ one commenter wrote. โ€œThey do the bare minimum and have little real investment in the community.โ€

A race with promise, but a widening credibility gap

Boulderthon has grown quickly since launching in 2021, attracting thousands of runners and positioning itself as a destination event with a marathon, half, 10K, and 5K all held on the same morning. But the blend of ambition and urban geography is proving difficult to manage.

The timing data makes the train incident impossible to dismiss, showing a five-minute gap where none should exist. Boulderthonโ€™s response was swift and contrite, but the episode, combined with mounting frustration over logistics, suggests the raceโ€™s relationship with the city is fraying.

Whether it can win back goodwill may depend less on prize money or marketing and more on the unglamorous details of course planning, community outreach, and coordination with the railroad.

For now, one thingโ€™s clear: Boulderโ€™s runners and residents will be watching closely next year.
