the beauty of the sport. You can typically find a marathon to run that’s within easy driving distance of the front door. And you can just as typically find a marathon that’s halfway around the world at some location you’ve always wanted to visit because, although the photos in National Geographic are swell, you want to really hear and smell and feel the nuances of the place. Running through it, you can truly experience the place, whether it’s running along old Route 66 dodging rusted pickup trucks or amidst the penguin guano at the Antarctic. There’s adventure and experiences to be had out on those roads. There are friends to be met, stories to be woven, memories to be made, goals to be lusted after.

Mark Twain, who traveled more than most and who did that traveling with a jaded eye toward what were

reputed to be wondrous sights, made this observation in a speech in 1868: “Ttliberalizes the Vandal to travel. You never saw a bigoted, opinionated, stubborn, narrow-minded, self-conceited, almighty mean man in your life but he had stuck in one place ever since he was born and thought God made the world and dyspepsia and bile for his especial comfort.”

So to those who throw “especial comfort” to the winds and the seven seas to seek out adventures for their own sake, who lust after the next horizon, you have our thanks. Is what you do excessive? Perhaps. Is what you do necessary? Perhaps not. Does what you do advance the species? You betcha. Send postcards, take a lot of pictures, and stop long enough to share with us the end product of your particular quirks. The door’s always open. —Rich Benyo
