Mike Lambert is a scientist at the Sports Science Institute in South Africa and a many-times finisher of the Two Oceans Marathon.</p>\n<!-- /wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>MANY COACHES/advisors likely recommend running a slower training pace because they want to protect their charges from injury during training, and also perhaps from burnout. The assumption is that submaximal effort in training will more safely put away plenty of mileage, leaving the excitement of the race to pull out the extra speed over the full marathon distance.</p>\n<!-- /wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>For many runners this is probably a good strategy. On the other hand, some outstanding athletes are able to accommodate high-speed training over full distances, and so break existing records. Examples of such pioneering athletes include the great Emil Zatopek, winner of the 5,000 meters, 10,000 meters, and marathon at the 1952 Olympics, who trained so fast and so much that he was the despair of his coaches; and Gordon Pirie, who pioneered fast, hard training in</p>\n<!-- /wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Britain in the 1950s, enabling him to break world records and challenge Vladimir Kuts in the 1956 Olympic 10,000 meters in Melbourne (although his suicidal speed for much of the race forced him to fall back to finish in sixth place).</p>\n<!-- /wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Ofcourse mostrunners cannot tolerate such training schedules for long and succumb to frequent injuries or constant fatigue. He has a tendency to parallel milestones in his own life with those of Howard Stern, a habit he has been unable to break. He ran in the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 10,000 meters in 1992 and 1996 and for the marathon team in 1996 and 2000.
