“& BEYOND”

In this issue we carry three profiles of people who, faced with daunting challenges in their lives, stepped forward to confront and overcome their obstacles. In fact, in the midst of or in the wake of their great personal trials, these three took on the additional challenge of running a marathon as a cathartic quest to expand and celebrate their efforts to live life to the fullest. These three represent a special breed of human being that thrives on challenge; they turn their tribulations around and become greater than they would have been had the challenge not been thrown in their way. While millions of people today devolve by doing nothing to grow and advance themselves, these three are the epitome of the rugged individuals who move the human species one big positive step ahead in the evolutionary process. We have dubbed the special section “& Beyond” as part of the evolutionary process of this magazine. When Marathon & Beyond was conceived, the title referred to the literal meaning: all things involving the marathon and the ultramarathon. But as the magazine has grown, the “& Beyond” has taken on several other meanings. Certainly it retains its original meaning, but it also refers to less tangible aspects of the sport and lifestyle of running marathons and

ultras. “& Beyond” refers to what happens beyond the planting of one footin front of the other for 26.2 miles or more. It refers to the psychology, spirituality, and deeper meaning that comes with covering an enormous number of miles under your own power. It lends depth to the often trite use of the word “empowered.”

A person who works long, hard, and diligently to prepare torun a marathon or an ultra accumulates his or her own personal power. The accomplishment spills into many other aspects of the person’s life, from work to interpersonal relationships. No person can bestow self-esteem upon another; self-esteem must be personally earned or else be hollow and false. Isuggestthat accomplishing the seemingly impossible through good oldfashioned hard work fills the well of self-esteem to overflowing. Such an accomplishment falls within the class of “& Beyond.” But the “& Beyond” extends even further. It is the expansion of a physical act to form a community among those who participate. It provides a common ground upon which to build relationships.

The first definition of the word “common” in my very battered and used Webster’s Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary is “of or relating toa community at large.” Definition 2a is “belonging to or shared by two or more
