Milkesa Mengesha has been quiet this spring — but he won’t be on April 20.
The Boston Athletic Association has added the 25-year-old Ethiopian to the professional men’s elite field for the 130th Boston Marathon, and his presence changes the calculus of an already competitive race. Mengesha ran 2:03:17 at the 2024 Berlin Marathon, the third fastest marathon time in the world that year. He won Berlin by five seconds over Kenya’s Cybrian Kotut, in a final kilometer that neither runner gave an inch.
It was the kind of performance that makes people pay attention.

From the Track to the Roads
Mengesha didn’t come up as a road runner. He grew up in Ethiopia’s western Welega province, one of seven siblings, and made his name on the track and cross country. In 2019, he won the U20 World Cross Country Championship. By 2021, he was competing at the Tokyo Olympics in the 5,000 meters.
The transition to the marathon was gradual — and then, at Berlin, it was emphatic.
His 2:03:17 didn’t just announce him as a top-tier road racer. It put him in the same conversation as the sport’s greatest distance runners. He now trains in Addis Ababa alongside some of the fastest marathon runners in the world, including Tigst Assefa and Tigist Ketema.

What He’s Shown Since Berlin
Berlin wasn’t a one-off. In November 2025, Mengesha won the Shanghai Marathon in 2:06:25, edging compatriot Dawit Wolde by just two seconds. Ethiopia swept the podium in Shanghai — a reminder of just how deep that country’s marathon talent runs.
He currently sits sixth in the World Athletics marathon rankings.

Why Boston Matters
Boston is a different beast. Unlike Berlin — a fast, flat course — Boston is famously uneven, with the punishing Newton Hills in the final third of the race and Heartbreak Hill at mile 20. A 2:03 on a flat course doesn’t automatically translate, and no runner can simply pace their way to victory here.
That said, Mengesha has the speed to make something happen in the late miles if the race opens up. At 25, he’s also one of the younger contenders in the field, which means Boston 2026 may be the first of many appearances for him on Boylston Street.
