A Viral Trend Says Running Thickens Your Waist But The Research Says the Opposite.

Pooled data from thousands of adults shows aerobic exercise trims waist circumference by around 3 cm. The "runner's waist" claim spreading on TikTok, aimed mostly at young women, describes the reverse.

A trend circulating on TikTok warns that logging miles will thicken the waist and square off the midsection, blunting an hourglass shape by building bulky oblique muscles. The largest pooled studies of aerobic exercise point the other way. On average, it makes waists smaller.

The claim, sometimes filed alongside “cortisol face” and “runner’s face,” rests on a plausible-sounding chain: running works the core, the obliques sit at the sides of the waist, worked muscles grow, so the waist widens. The chain breaks at the middle step, which is not how endurance exercise affects muscle.

What the Waistline Studies Found

A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis in Obesity Reviews combined 25 randomized controlled trials covering 1,686 participants and found that regular aerobic exercise reduced waist circumference by 3.2 cm compared with no exercise. Vigorous efforts did more, cutting 4.2 cm against 2.5 cm for moderate work.

A larger 2024 dose-response analysis in JAMA Network Open, pooling 116 trials and 6,880 adults, put a rate on it: each additional 30 minutes of aerobic exercise per week was linked to about 0.56 cm off the waist, with the clearest reductions past 150 minutes per week. Both bodies of work studied adults with overweight or obesity, so the exact centimeters do not transfer cleanly to a lean recreational runner. The direction is consistent, and it runs toward a smaller waist, driven by loss of the visceral fat that waist measurement tracks. That is the opposite of what the trend predicts, and it matches what is already known about running for weight loss and how aerobic training burns belly fat.

Why the Muscle Cannot Bulk

Muscles enlarge through hypertrophy, which requires high mechanical tension, usually heavy resistance, applied with enough progressive load to force the tissue to adapt in size. Running supplies almost none of that to the trunk. It is a low-resistance, high-repetition endurance stimulus, and the core’s job on a run is to stabilize the torso, not to move a load.

Measurements bear that division out. A 2025 electromyography study in Sensors recorded the internal oblique and other trunk muscles in 51 women running on a treadmill at 6, 9 and 11 km/h, and the obliques were active throughout, working as stabilizers to keep the runner upright and square. Activation is the muscle doing its job, not the sustained overload that adds size. A stabilizer can fire on every stride for years without growing bulky.

Even training the core directly does less to the physique than people assume. A six-week core-strength program in a 2009 Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research trial improved runners’ 5K times, not their body shape, and an eight-week program in PLOS One in 2019 raised trunk endurance and running economy. Both built capacity, not mass. If dedicated core work barely changes how the waist looks, the incidental core involvement of a run changes it less, which is also why running alone rarely builds visible abs.

When a Waist Really Does Change

Waists do change, and the trend borrows its credibility from that. Some shifts are temporary: post-run inflammation, water retention and bloating can alter how the midsection looks for a day. Others are real but not caused by running. Heavy loaded oblique work such as weighted side bends can thicken those muscles over time, and a prolonged calorie surplus adds size everywhere, including the waist. Fat distribution, rib-cage width and hip width are set largely by genetics, which no amount of running overrides. Some runners even find they are gaining weight rather than losing it, usually for reasons of diet and total load rather than midsection muscle.

The blocky physique attributed to sprinters is a category error. Elite sprinters lift heavily and train for power; their bodies reflect years of specialized work and favorable genetics, not the act of running. On a lean distance runner, a waist can also look wider than it is simply because the shoulders and legs around it carry little mass. What reads as thickness is often just proportion.

The Cost of the Myth

The reason to correct this goes past pedantry. The non-profit ExerciseNZ flagged “runner’s waist” and “cortisol face” as trends that trade on the fear of looking bulky to steer young women away from exercise. “We’ve gone from celebrating what our bodies can do to worrying about whether our waistline or face fits the latest TikTok trend,” the organization’s chief executive, Richard Beddie, said. “That’s a step backwards.”

The supply of such advice is large and largely unvetted. When researchers at Flinders University analyzed 200 fitness videos on TikTok in a 2024 study in the journal Body Image, they judged roughly 60 percent to carry inaccurate or harmful information, most of it from creators with no relevant qualifications. “Runner’s waist” is one more entry in that pile, following “runner’s face,” the earlier claim that impact ages the skin.

The evidence gives a plain answer: more minutes on the road are associated with a smaller waist, not a larger one.
