What time does the broadcast start, and how can I live stream the race?
The Houston Marathon is on Sunday, Jan. 14, beginning at 7:01 a.m. CT (8:01 a.m. ET). The pre-race broadcast, which will also be live streamed, will begin about 30 minutes before the start.
You can live stream the Houston Marathon and Half-Marathon race on ABC13โs website here. It appears that this stream is not geo-restricted, meaning it should work around the world.
You can also live stream the race at ESPN3.com and on the ESPN app (you must be a monthly subscriber).
You can also check this link for a YouTube live stream.
Who is hosting the broadcast?
Along with the local ABC13 news crew, the event is bringing in Boston Marathon winner and living legend Des Linden. She’s a known straight shooter and great hang, so she should provide excellent insights and perhaps a hot take or two.
What should you watch for?
There are a bevy of storylines to follow. There will probably be an attempt at the North American half-marathon record, as well as the American soil record in the the women’s half-marathon. The marathon will feature a group of international athletes all aiming to run under the Olympic “A” standard for this summer’s Olympic Games in Paris. Top Americans who will be running the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials next month will also be running the half-marathon in Houston as a fitness test.
What’s special about this year?
Houston has historically been a fast course with good performances, but in an Olympic year, this event is perfectly situated as a proving ground for many of the world’s best runners. Both the half-marathon and marathon should produce exciting racing and some fast times.
What impact does this have on Olympic teams?
For some, it’s merely a fitness test or a chance to make a statement in the marathon, even if they have a slim chance of making, say, the Ethiopian Olympic squad. But for others, like American Galen Rupp, running under a specific time is do or die in terms of gaining enough of a global ranking to even be under consideration for an Olympic spot. Many athletes from countries like Canada, the UK, Ireland and Mexico have athletes in the marathon in Houston simply aiming to run under the Olympic standard in (2:08:10/2:26:30) in order to crack their Paris squad. And time is running out, as the qualification window closes in the spring.
Is the race being broadcasted on TV?
Yes. Locally, ABC13 will broadcast the race live from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. CT. An edited recap will broadcast later that night at 10:35 p.m CT.
