Philimon Kipchumba and Kasanesh Baze Win the 2026 Istanbul Marathon 1

Philimon Kipchumba won the Istanbul Marathon on Sunday in 2:08:45, taking 59 seconds off the course record Daniel Kibet set in 2019. The 28-year-old Kenyan caught Shadrack Kenduiywo, who had gone through halfway alone in 61:58 and led by two minutes at 25K, just before 40K, and then pulled away on the climb to the finish in Sultanahmet Square. Sufaro Woliyi of Ethiopia was second in 2:08:55 and Vincent Ronoh third in 2:08:58. Seven men broke 2:10, according to the organizers, in a race where only three had ever done so before. Kenduiywo held on for eighth.

Kasanesh Baze won the women’s race in 2:24:41, seven seconds ahead of Azmera Abreha, as Ethiopian runners took the first five places. Diribe Alemu, 19, was third in her marathon debut, according to World-Track. Baze’s personal best is the 2:19:39 she ran in Hamburg in April. Each winner took home $50,000, on the same morning as the New York City Marathon.
