ROGER ROBINSON was ranked number-one masters road racer in the world by The Runner magazine in 1980 and set a New York City Marathon over-50 record (2:28:02) in 1990. He is professor of English and former academic vice chancellor at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand, though he now lives part-time as a writer in New York. His major work of literary scholarship is the Oxford Companion to New Zealand Literature (1998) and his most recent, Robert Louis Stevenson: His Best Pacific Writings (Exisle, Auckland, 2002). He writes frequently on running and its history. His Heroes and Sparrows: A Celebration of Running (1986) is often listed as one of the sport’s best books (for example, volume 5, issue | of this magazine). Roger is a senior writer for Running Times and was the second “On the Road” columnist for this magazine, succeeding his wife, Kathrine Switzer.
CLAY SHAW and KAREN MITCHELL are marathon photographers and runners based in York, Pennsylvania. They have an annual circuit of race clients and regularly publish photographs in a variety of national and regional magazines. Clay was born and raised in San Francisco and has run 121 marathons and 3 ultras. He has run in each of the 50 states and D.C., a challenge he finished on June 4, 1995. Clay has also run marathons in all of the Canadian provinces and territories. He has won two marathons outright, the 1993 Wyoming Marathon and the 2000 Nunavut (Canada) Marathon in Arctic Bay, Nunavut. His PR is 2:53:51. Clay has also directed major races in the York area for more than 20 years. Karen has completed 47 marathons in a variety of locations. Her PR is 3:27, which she ran in Edmonton in 1997. She was the women’s champion at the Nanisivik Midnight Sun Marathon in both 1997 and 1998. Her international marathons include 8 in Canada, plus Iceland, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Cuba, and Algeria. In her other life, Karen is a senior manager working for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. She is currently the human resources team manager, working on a three-year project called Imagine PA.
