ROGER ROBINSON was ranked number one masters road racer in the world by The Runner magazine in 1980 and set a New York City Marathon over-50 record (2:28:02) in 1990. He is professor of English and former academic vice chancellor at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand, though he now lives part-time as a writer in New York. His major

j work of literary scholarship is the Oxford Companion to New Zealand Literature (1998) and his most recent, Robert Louis Stevenson: His Best Pacific Writings (Exisle, Auckland, 2001). He writes frequently on running and its history. His Heroes and Sparrows: A Celebration of Running (1986) is often listed as one of the sport’s best books (for example, volume 5, issue 1 of this magazine). In 1997-99, Roger was the second “On the Road” columnist for this magazine, succeeding his wife, Kathrine Switzer.

BARRY LEWIS, the author of Running the Trans America Footrace: Trials and Triumphs of Life on the Road, is a frequent contributor to M&B. He last wrote about Jerry Dunn’s 200 marathons in 2000 in the November/December 2001 issue. Barry has been a fixture on the East Coast ultra scene for more than a decade and has more than 60 races beyond the marathon under his belt. He completed the 2001 del Passatore in 8:51. It seemed to have worked as a training run: less than two months later, he finished second in the Vermont 100-Mile Trail Race.
