Comparing Running Shoes for Marathons

The right pair of shoes can make or break your marathon experience. Shoes that fit well and provide adequate support can prevent injuries and make those final miles more comfortable. Shoes that don’t fit properly can lead to blisters, injuries, and a miserable race.

When shopping for marathon shoes, visit a specialty running store where they can analyze your gait. Your running style determines whether you need stability shoes, neutral shoes, or something in between.

Cushioning is another key consideration. Some runners prefer minimal cushioning, while others want maximum comfort. There’s no right answer—it depends on your preferences and what feels good on your feet.

Distance between trainers and race shoes can also be significant. Some runners like to race in lighter, more responsive shoes, while others stick with the same shoe for both training and racing.

Most importantly, break in your shoes before race day. Run at least 50-100 miles in them during training to make sure they work for your feet.
