The Mental Game
The marathon is as much a mental challenge as it is a physical one. In fact, for many runners, the mental aspect is harder than the physical. Learning to manage your mind during the race is critical for success.
During a marathon, you will hit difficult periods. Around mile 20, many runners experience self-doubt and a desire to stop. This is where mental toughness comes in. Runners who succeed are those who can push through these difficult periods and keep moving toward the finish line.
Strategies for managing the mental challenge include: breaking the race into smaller segments, using positive self-talk, focusing on your breathing, and drawing strength from the spectators and other runners around you.
Many runners also benefit from having a mantra or a saying they repeat to themselves during difficult moments. This gives them something to focus on and can help push through the pain and doubt.
Mental preparation during training is just as important as physical preparation. Practicing mental strategies during training long runs will help them become habitual during the race, when you need them most.
