Sha’Carri Richardson, the reigning world 100m champion, has shared her breakfast of choice on race days and training days.
The fastest woman in the world and an icon in the track scene, Richardson spoke with Eating Well about her breakfast habits, favorite foods, and even a few of her favorite ways to recover.
Richardson describes herself as a foodie, eager to explore diverse culinary options. However, she makes it clear that she only revisits meals she truly enjoys. When it comes to breakfast, her choice varies depending on her schedule, but she consistently loves starting her day with eggs.
“I am a big foodie. I like to eat a little bit of everything when it comes to food. I like to try everything once—no, I may not eat it again if I don’t like it, but I’m very open to trying any type of food once before canceling it out,” Richardson explains.
“For breakfast, it depends on the timing. If I have time, I make something, but I’m a big fan of eggs. Eggs are my go-to on race day or any regular day.”
In addition to eggs, Richardson has recently become an ambassador for yogurt brand Oikos and the Oikos Pro Drink, which she says is perfect for days when a heavy breakfast isn’t appealing. She highlighted its convenience and nutritional benefits, noting that it contains 23 grams of protein.
“When I’m on the go and don’t want something too heavy to start the day, I definitely like my Oikos Pro Drink. It’s convenient, quick to consume, and I still feel like I’m getting the nutrients I need for practice on a daily basis,” she said.
For snacking, the 24-year-old athlete sticks to dried fruits, particularly mangoes, peanuts, and almonds.
“I like dried fruits a lot, specifically dried mangoes, as well as peanuts and almonds. I keep it very light and straightforward when it comes to snacking,” she shared.
So, what does eating well mean to an elite sprinter like Richardson?
“Fueling myself with the proper things that of course I need, but also tastes good because I do like to enjoy the food that I eat. Giving myself those things that way my body gives me what I need when I go and perform. Eating well is honestly taking care of yourself and appreciating your body and appreciating the food that you’re eating too.”
In terms of recovery, Richardson prefers ice baths or hot tubs to relax after a strenuous day. She also enjoys connecting with her family and engaging in light activities like stretching and ab exercises in the pool.
“Recovery involves being attentive to ice bathing or using a hot tub, and decompressing in the evening. I enjoy talking to my family or doing some light stretching and abs exercises in the pool to end my day.”
