Although the women’s race stole the spotlight, the men’s 2024 London Marathon was equally as thrilling.
Reigning New York City Marathon champion Tamirat Tola was one of the talented headliners in the men’s field.
He was accompanied by seasoned veterans Mosinet Geremew and Kenenisa Bekele.
The British contingent, featuring Emile Cairess, Marc Scott, and Callum Hawkins, were also seeking fast times on home soil.
The men’s race was run quite opposite to the women’s. A large group of 10-12 athletes came through the halfway mark of the race in 1:01:29
Tola sat confidently at the front of the race throughout, while Bekele was comfortably hidden in the middle of the pack, getting swept along with his competitors.
Bekele surged in the backend of the race and, with 5K to go, had whittled the group down to himself and Alexander Munyano.
It came down to a fast finish, with Munyano taking it ahead of the group in 2:04:01.
Just behind him was Bekele, finishing with a time of 2:04:14. Rounding out the podium was Britain’s Cairess, clocking a time of 2:06:46.
Cairess, the top British athlete, impressed the home crowd. The youngster, only 26 years old, ran an 82-second personal best, just shy of Mo Farah’s British record, earning himself a spot on Team GB’s Olympic selection.
