The 2026 European Athletics Championships opened on August 10 at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, and the first night settled three track titles. Britain’s Amy Hunt closed the evening with 100m gold in 11.00, holding off Poland’s Ewa Swoboda by two hundredths. Jakob Ingebrigtsen was made to work for the men’s 5000m, winning a bunched sprint finish in 13:15.29 by just over a tenth from Germany’s Florian Bremm. And Norway, anchored by the group of Karsten Warholm, Amalie Iuel, Andreas Ofstad Kulseng and Henriette Jæger, took the mixed 4x400m relay in 3:09.62, with Great Britain second.
