60-Year-Old Runner Dies at Hardrock 100

Elaine Stypula suffered a medical emergency on the high-altitude course early Friday morning

A tragic incident occurred early Friday morning during the opening hours of the 2025 Hardrock 100, as one runner died near Little Giant Basin, just west of Silverton, Colorado.

According to an official statement from the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office and the San Juan County Colorado Coronerโ€™s Office, 60-year-old Elaine Stypula of Michigan was pronounced deceased at 10:27 a.m. after experiencing an unspecified medical emergency near Gold Lake.

The sheriffโ€™s office received a Search and Rescue call at 9:02 a.m., and the Silverton Medical Rescue team responded swiftly, though Stypula could not be revived.

The exact cause of death has not been released and remains under investigation. A statement from San Juan County Coroner Keri Metzler extended condolences to Stypulaโ€™s loved ones:

“I want to extend my condolences to the family, friends and community of Elaine Stypula.”

The Hardrock 100 organizing team also shared a message of sympathy via Instagram on Friday afternoon, writing:

“We are deeply saddened to share that a beloved member of our Hardrock Hundred Mile Endurance Run family has passed away during this yearโ€™s event. Our hearts are with their family, friends, and fellow runners as we grieve this tremendous loss.”

“We are committed to caring for runners, crews, volunteers, and all members of our community through the eventโ€™s duration and beyond.”

The Hardrock 100 is one of the most challenging ultramarathons in the world, taking place on a remote, high-altitude loop in the San Juan Mountains. Runners navigate more than 33,000 feet of vertical gain over 102.5 miles, often in extreme weather and rugged terrain.

This yearโ€™s event began at 6 a.m. Friday, with runners expected to be on course for up to 48 hours.

While fatalities at major ultramarathons remain rare, the risks of high-altitude endurance events are well documented. Organizers have long emphasized the race’s inherent hazards, including falls, exposure, lightning, and altitude-related illnesses.

This year’s race continues with heavy hearts, as the trail running community mourns the loss of one of its own. Elaine Stypula is being remembered as part of the extended Hardrock family, with tributes already emerging across social media from fellow athletes and supporters.

Further details are expected to be released as the investigation continues. Marathon Handbook will update this story as more information becomes available.
