Agnes Ngetich Takes Solo Win At World Cross Country Championships 1

Agnes Ngetich claimed the senior womenโ€™s 10K title at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships on Saturday in Tallahassee, pulling away from the field to win convincingly in warm conditions at Apalachee Regional Park.

The 24-year-old Kenyan finished in 31:28, winning by 42 seconds over Ugandaโ€™s Joy Cheptoyek. Ethiopiaโ€™s Senayet Getachew rounded out the podium in 32:13.

Ngetich has been one of the strongest road runners in the world over the past two seasons, with her standout moments being her world records over 10km in both mixed-gender races (28:46) and women’s-only race (29:27).

While she arrived in Tallahassee as one of the favourites, cross country championships often come down to terrain and resilience, and not just raw speed. On Saturday, she clearly had both.

She moved to the front early and gradually thinned the field as the race wore on, pushing the pace through the courseโ€™s mud, sand, and barrier sections. By the later stages, she was running alone, opening a gap that no one could manage to close.

Cheptoyek ran a measured race behind her to secure silver, holding off a large Ethiopian contingent. Getachew took third, with Asayech Ayichew finishing fourth as Ethiopia placed four athletes inside the top eight.

That depth proved decisive in the team standings. Ethiopia won the womenโ€™s team title with 19 points, ahead of Kenya with 36 and Uganda with 37.

The United States finished fourth with 83 points, led by Ednah Kurgat, who placed 10th in 33:28 as the top non-African finisher. Australia followed in fifth with 103 points.

With defending champion Beatrice Chebet absent from this yearโ€™s championships, the womenโ€™s race was open heading into the weekend. Ngetich answered that uncertainty early, turning the race into a solo effort long before the finish.
