New York City Marathon Course Map and Elevation Profile
The TCS New York City Marathon is renowned for its tough, diverse course, with around 1,000 feet of elevation gain. The race kicks off on Staten Island with a challenging ascent over the Verrazzano Bridge, which is the biggest climb on the course, before dropping into Brooklyn, where runners must pace carefully to avoid burning out too early on Fourth Avenueโs rolling hills. Each bib color follows its own path until mile 3, when runners unite on Fourth Avenue, navigating streets alive with energy and lined with cheering spectators.
Read Our Mile-By-Mile Breakdown of the New York City Marathon Course:
The raceโs halfway point on the Pulaski Bridge leads into Queens, which offers a fast, flat section. Queens culminates in the tough Queensboro Bridge, a long, quiet climb without spectators that demands focus. This bridge leads into Manhattan, where thick, enthusiastic crowds buoy a long stretch up First Avenue from 59th to 126th Streetโthough runners must push through a gradual climb all the way to the Willis Avenue Bridge into the Bronx. In the Bronx, local run clubs keep spirits high, especially crucial around mile 20, where many hit โthe wall.โ
Minimum Elevation: 7 feet (2m)
Maximum Elevation: 260 feet (79m) Elevation Gain: 810 feet (246m)
Elevation Loss: 824 feet (251m)

Returning to Manhattan via the Madison Avenue Bridge, runners face one last gruelling incline on Fifth Avenue before entering Central Park at mile 23. The park offers both a downhill break and dense cheering crowds. After a brief stretch on Central Park South at mile 25, runners turn back into the park for the final approach. With spectators roaring them on, runners hit mile 26 and push to the finish line, completing this epic, iconic marathon.

Key Storylines To Watch At The 2024 New York City Marathon
Olympic Champion Tamirat Tola Eyes Another Victory
Tamirat Tola, who set a course record last year in New York with a time of 2:04:58, comes into the race fresh off an Olympic gold medal win in Paris, where he set a new Olympic record of 2:06:26. Tola was added to the Ethiopian team just two weeks before the Olympics, initially slated as a reserve. He will undoubtedly be coming in as the one to watch in the menโs field.
When speaking to World Athletics, Tola said, โIโm excited to defend my title in New York, especially coming off an Olympic-record marathon performance. The hilly course and crowds in Paris definitely prepared me well for the bridges and spectators in New York, where maybe I can go even faster this year.โ
Joining Tola in the menโs race is Belgiumโs Bashir Abdi, a two-time Olympic medalist who recently secured a silver medal in the Paris Olympics marathon behind Tola. Abdi also boasts a bronze from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2022 World Championships.
The menโs field also features three former champions from Kenya: 2022 winner Evans Chebet, 2021 victor Albert Korir, and Geoffrey Kamworor, who took the title in 2017 and 2019.
Chebet, a two-time Boston Marathon champion, has finished on the podium in 13 marathons, while Kamworor has consistently placed in the top three in all his New York Marathon appearances. Additionally, Abel Kipchumba, this yearโs NYC Half Marathon winner, will make his New York City Marathon debut.
Fan favorites Conner Mantz and Clayton Young, who finished eighth and ninth, respectively, in the Olympic marathon in Paris, will carry the American menโs hopes.
Hellen Obiri Hopes To Double Up In NYC
Hellen Obiri, a three-time Olympic medalist and seven-time world medalist, made history last year by becoming the first woman in 34 years to win both the Boston and New York Marathons in the same year. This year, she successfully defended her Boston Marathon title and earned a bronze medal in the Olympic marathon.
โThereโs no place like New York, and I am so ready to defend my title,โ Obiri told World Athletics. โI have been racing very well on the roads in the US, and I hope I can have another good day that sees me in contention once we enter the final stages in Central Park.โ
The womenโs race also sees the return of 2022 NYC Marathon champion Sharon Lokedi, who also finished third in New York last year and fourth in the 2024 Paris Olympic marathon. The Kenyan contingent will also feature 2010 champion Edna Kiplagat, four-time Olympic medalist Vivian Cheruiyot, and Sheila Chepkirui, who holds the fastest personal best in the field.
Ethiopiaโs Tirunesh Dibaba, a three-time Olympic champion and 16-time world champion, will make her New York City Marathon debut. Compatriot Senbere Teferi will join her.
Leading the American women is Dakotah Lindwurm, the top American finisher in the marathon at the Paris Olympics.
