Why it matters
Germany’s Laura Philipp has set a new benchmark in Ironman history. Her marathon time of 2:38:27 is now the fastest ever run by a woman in a full-distance Ironman, part of her overall 8:03:13 finish that also reclaimed the world-best Ironman time for a professional woman.
This marks a powerful return to form and the continuation of one of triathlon’s most compelling rivalries with Britain’s Kat Matthews.
What’s happening
At the 2025 Ironman Hamburg European Championship:
- Laura Philipp won in 8:03:13 — the fastest women’s Ironman time ever recorded.
- Her 2:38:27 marathon split shattered the previous best (Ruth Astle’s 2:41:45 at Ironman Israel, 2022).
- She overcame a 53-second deficit off the bike to outpace Kat Matthews, who finished second in 8:05:13.
- Norwegian debutant Solveig Løvseth placed third in 8:12:28 — the fastest debut ever by a professional woman.
The women’s field produced three of the five fastest times in Ironman history, all within a single race.
The backstory
The race was delayed 45 minutes due to thunderstorms, but intensity never wavered once underway. Matthews led out of the swim in 54:38 with Philipp seconds behind.
Matthews attacked late on the bike to gain a gap heading into transition, but Philipp remained composed.
In the marathon, the two traded near-identical splits through 30 kilometers. With 8 kilometers remaining, Philipp surged decisively and never looked back.
What they said
“It was absolutely mental, we (Laura and Kat) were kind of glued together for the entire race…it was super tough and for a long time it looked like Kat would win. I just tried to remain calm and patient, because a marathon is a long game, and luckily it paid off,” Philipp said to Slowtwitch.
“ I couldn’t shake her all day, and she got the better of me at 10K to go or whenever it was,” said Matthews to Slowtwitch. “If an athlete of the caliber of Laura Philipp and the current world champion is in your eyes, you’re not in control.”
By the numbers
Top 5 Women – Ironman Hamburg 2025:
- Laura Philipp (GER) – 8:03:13 (Marathon: 2:38:27)
- Kat Matthews (GBR) – 8:05:13 (Marathon: 2:40:58)
- Solveig Løvseth (NOR) – 8:12:28
- Anne Reischmann (GER) – 8:32:46
- Leonie Konczalla (GER) – 8:42:39
The bigger picture
Philipp’s record run raises the question of whether a sub-8-hour finish in women’s Ironman racing is on the horizon. With rising stars like Løvseth and the continued excellence of Matthews, the women’s field is not just gaining depth—it is breaking through performance ceilings.
Philipp’s comeback sets the tone for the season. If Hamburg was just the beginning, Kona could deliver another rewrite of the record books.
