Natasha Ward, an Australian middle-distance runner who took a national university bronze medal in the 800m earlier this year, has died at 21. NSW Athletics and her club, the Sutherland District Athletics Club in Sydney, announced her death on Thursday and did not give a cause.
Ward competed mainly over 400m, 800m and 1,500m. As a junior she medaled in the 1,500m at the New South Wales All Schools championships, then carried that form into her university years, taking a 1,500m medal at the UniSport Nationals in 2023 and bronze in the 800m at the same championships in April. She raced at the 2024 Australian Championships, in fields that also included the well-known Australian runners Morgan Mitchell and Claudia Hollingsworth.
In a joint statement, NSW Athletics and the Sutherland club called Ward “a greatly loved member of our community” whose “magnetic smile and warm personality have left a permanent mark on Australian athletics.” They said she competed in the club’s summer and winter relays each year and often stepped in when a team was short a runner.

Ward studied exercise and sports science at Macquarie University in Sydney, according to her LinkedIn profile.
Her death comes weeks after that of Jemma Stapleton, a 25-year-old Australian sprinter who died in June in a road accident while on holiday on the Thai island of Koh Samui. There is no indication the two are linked.
“Our thoughts are with Natasha’s family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her,” the statement said.
