Track and Field Executive Continued Working for Months After Child Sexual Abuse Charges

Daniel Bowdoin remained active in the sport well into 2025 despite multiple felony indictments

Daniel Bowdoin, a senior executive at one of the most prominent timing and results companies in U.S. track and field, continued working in the sport for nearly a year after being charged with multiple counts of child sexual abuse in Oregon.

Court records from Marion County show that Bowdoin was charged on November 27, 2024, with five felony counts: first-degree rape, two counts of first-degree sodomy, first-degree unlawful sexual penetration, and first-degree sexual abuse.

The victim, identified in filings as E.B., was between four and seven years old at the time of the alleged abuse, which prosecutors say occurred between 2021 and 2023.

At the time of the charges, Bowdoin was serving as CEO of AthleticTIMING and chief operating officer of AthleticNET, one of the sportโ€™s most widely used platforms for meet management and results. Athletic, the parent company, also operates the media outlet RunnerSpace, though Bowdoin was not involved in that division.

Founded in Oregon in the early 2000s, AthleticNET has become one of the central digital platforms for track and cross-country in North America, used by thousands of high schools, colleges, and clubs to manage results, entries, and meet logistics.

Its sister company, AthleticTIMING, provides on-the-ground event timing services at meets ranging from local invitationals to major collegiate championships and national high school events.

Together, the companies are considered essential infrastructure within the U.S. track and field ecosystem, often operating behind the scenes at competitions hosted by Nike, USA Track & Field, and the Oregon School Activities Association.

Despite the severity of the charges, Bowdoin continued working in track and field into 2025. Court documents show that in February 2025, his attorney petitioned to allow him to work at track meets under supervision, citing his role in organizing several collegiate and high-school events. A judge denied the request in March, warning Bowdoin that he was โ€œunsure how [he] was out on these charges.โ€

According to Athletic, the company did not learn of the case until October 18, 2025.

โ€œAlthough the individual was arraigned on those charges in January, the company had no prior knowledge of the matter,โ€ a spokesperson told Front Office Sports. โ€œUpon learning of the charges, the employee was immediately placed on administrative leave pending further review.โ€ Bowdoin was no longer employed by Athletic as of October 27.

Court filings reviewed by Front Office Sports show that prosecutors moved to revoke Bowdoinโ€™s release at the end of October, alleging that he had violated the terms of his bond by having contact with minors. He turned himself in on November 2 and is currently being held on $1 million bond. His trial is scheduled to begin April 14, 2026.

Athleticโ€™s CEO, Ross Krempley, said Bowdoin attended four collegiate-only events in 2025 and that none involved minors. Southern Oregon University confirmed to FOS that Bowdoin worked the Cascade Conference Championships in May. Other institutions contacted by FOS either did not respond or said they were unaware of his involvement.

USA Track & Field said it was informed of the allegations only this month.

โ€œThe allegations against this individual are reprehensible,โ€ the federation said in a statement. โ€œWhile USATF engages with Athletic.net as a vendor, our relationship is with that organization and not any specific employees. Mr. Bowdoin has not been credentialed by USATF to attend an event since 2023.โ€

The U.S. Center for SafeSport, which oversees misconduct investigations in Olympic sports, added Bowdoinโ€™s name to its disciplinary database on November 7, listing a temporary suspension for โ€œallegations of misconduct.โ€ Prior to that, his name did not appear in the registry. A SafeSport spokesperson told FOS that a criminal sexual abuse charge is a violation of SafeSport code and would trigger a suspension.

Nike, which partners with Athletic on the Nike Outdoor Nationals meet, said it learned of the charges on November 6 after a post appeared on the LetsRun message board. โ€œWhile we were informed Athletic took actions, we will be ensuring we understand how this situation occurred, how it is being addressed, and what is being done to prevent it from happening in the future,โ€ the company said in a statement.

The Oregon School Activities Association, which oversees high-school sports in the state, said it was unaware of the charges until last week. It confirmed that Bowdoin did not work at its 2025 Track and Field State Championships and described the allegations as โ€œabhorrent.โ€ The organization said it plans to review its vendor protocols.

Bowdoinโ€™s case has highlighted gaps in how vendors and contractors in track and field are screened or monitored. Unlike coaches, officials, or athletes, many vendors fall outside the direct purview of SafeSport or federation background-check systems, even when they have close access to competition areas and participants.

As of this week, Bowdoin remains in custody in Oregon. His attorney has not commented publicly.
