The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) has confirmed that more than 33,000 runners have applied for a chance to compete in the 2026 Boston Marathon, keeping alive the race’s reputation as the most coveted start line in distance running.

A total of 33,267 applications came in during registration week, held September 8–12, with athletes from 116 countries and all 50 U.S. states hoping to claim a bib. The race, presented by Bank of America, will return to its traditional Patriots’ Day slot on April 20, 2026.

“Year after year, the running community looks forward to April’s Boston Marathon with anticipation and excitement,” said Jack Fleming, president and CEO of the B.A.A. “Athletes from around the globe applied to be part of the Patriots’ Day tradition, and we look forward to welcoming many to the roads leading to Boylston Street next April.”

While the demand is high, the field is capped, meaning not all qualifiers will be accepted. For the 2025 race, the B.A.A. accepted just over 24,000 runners, while more than 12,000 who met qualifying standards were left out. That reality has become a defining feature of Boston’s modern era, since running a qualifying time is no longer a guarantee of entry, with many athletes left wondering if they will clear the “cutoff.”

The association will not speculate on what that cutoff might be for 2026. Instead, officials will now begin verifying times before sending out acceptance or rejection emails by early October. Historically, the margin has fluctuated widely, ranging from 7 minutes 47 seconds under the standard in 2021, one of the toughest years for hopefuls, to much smaller cushions in other editions.

For runners anxiously refreshing their inboxes, there is also the financial question. The B.A.A. clarified that credit cards are only charged once an entry is officially confirmed, though applicants may see a temporary preauthorization hold in the meantime. Entry fees remain non-refundable, non-transferable, and non-deferrable, underscoring the stakes for those waiting on the outcome.

The Boston Marathon’s qualifying system, first introduced in 1970, is part of what makes the event unique among the Abbott World Marathon Majors. Securing a bib is not just about meeting the qualifying standard, it is about outrunning thousands of others chasing the same dream.

Beyond the race itself, the event continues to be a major cultural and economic force. The 2024 edition generated more than half a billion dollars in economic activity for Massachusetts, according to state figures, reflecting its status as both an international sporting event and a citywide holiday.

Looking ahead, the qualifying window for the 2027 Boston Marathon has already opened, beginning September 13, 2025, and running through next fall. But for now, all eyes are on 2026, as more than 33,000 hopefuls wait to learn if they will be heading to Hopkinton next April.
