On June 26, the world’s greatest middle-distance runner will take a shot at one of the most enduring barriers in sport.
Faith Kipyegon, the reigning world record holder in both the 1,500m and the mile, is attempting to become the first woman in history to break the four-minute mile. The attempt will take place in Paris as part of Nike’s Breaking4 event, an ambitious, standalone project designed to help Kipyegon chase something that’s never been done before.
Nike is pulling out all the stops for this attempt, from bespoke spikes to a custom race setup. The event recalls the energy of Eliud Kipchoge’s Breaking2 in 2017 and his sub-two-hour marathon in 2019—but this time, it’s a track, not a road, and it’s a mile, not 26.2.
Kipyegon will need to cut nearly eight seconds off her own 4:07.64 world record to make it happen.
The stakes are massive. And if you want to witness it, here’s how.

Why It Matters
The four-minute mile isn’t just a number, it’s a threshold that reshaped running when Roger Bannister broke it in 1954. Since then, it’s been crossed by thousands of men. But for women, it has remained out of reach.
Faith Kipyegon doesn’t need this to prove anything. She’s already one of the greatest runners of all time, with Olympic golds, world titles, and world records to her name. But this race is about what’s possible, not just what’s been done before.
Whether she runs 3:59 or not, this attempt redefines the ceiling for women in distance running. And that makes it worth watching.
Marathon Handbook will be there to see it happen, and to bring you every moment.
