The nation of Kenya is in mourning following the untimely demise of marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum, who tragically lost his life in a fatal accident. 

As the country grapples with the shock of his passing, preparations for his final farewell are underway, with the proposed date set for February 24, pending final confirmation.

Kelvin Kiptum, a 24-year-old running sensation whose meteoric rise captivated the nation, will find his eternal resting place in his hometown of Chepkorio in northwest Kenya. The burial arrangements, spearheaded by the Ministry of Sports in close consultation with Kiptum’s family, aim to give him a befitting sendoff.

“We may be laying to rest Kelvin on Saturday, February 24th, and we want to invite Kenyans of goodwill, friends, leaders, and everyone to give him a befitting sendoff. The family is humble and in need of support as Kelvin has been a pillar for the entire community,” shared a member of the burial committee with reporters.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba affirmed that the Ministry of Sport and the government would take charge of the funeral arrangements to ensure that Kiptum, hailed as a national hero, receives posthumous honors reflective of his impactful life.

The Kenyan parliament also echoed the sentiment of national mourning by observing a minute’s silence in honor of Kiptum’s legacy.

Tragically, Kiptum’s promising journey came to an abrupt end on Saturday night, as he was pronounced dead at the scene following a tragic car accident at Kaptagat Forest along the Eldoret-Ravine road. 

His father, Samson Cheruiyot, expressed the need for thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident, claiming that four unknown individuals had visited their home prior to the tragic incident.

Kelvin Kiptum’s widow, Asenath Cheruto, along with the family of his Rwandan coach, Gervais Hakizimana, who also perished in the accident, witnessed the post-mortem exercise conducted on Hakizimana’s body at the Eldoret Hospital overseen by Dr. Benson Macharia.

However, they chose not to disclose the results.
