This year, the Berlin Marathon celebrates its 50th edition of the race, which was first held in 1974. It’s since grown from 244 finishers to this year becoming one of just four marathons in the world to accommodate more than 50,000 runners at the start line.

When is the Berlin Marathon?

The 2024 race is on Sunday, Sept. 29. The elite races start at 8:50 a.m. Local elite (2:50 a.m. EDT); the mass race begins at 9:15 a.m. local time, with four total waves continuing until 10:30 a.m. local time.

How Do I watch the Berlin Marathon?

The live stream will be carried on Flosports in the U.S., UK, and Canada, which requires paying a monthly subscription fee.



What are the Course records?

Men’s Berlin Marathon course record: 2:01:09 (2022 – Eliud Kipchoge, then a WR)

Women’s Berlin Marathon course record: 2:11:53 (2023 – Tigst Assefa, WR)

Berlin Marathon Fun Facts:

  • Race founded by a local baker and running nerd
  • It has a rollerblading marathon on the Saturday, since 1997, and the course records are 56:49 (men) and 1:06:35 (women)
  • The race is actually owned by SCC Berlin, which is a “sports club”; it also runs a pro soccer club , as well as an American football team (the Berlin Rebels), which is in the GFL (the Germany equivalent to the NFL)
  • The first race had 244 finishers; 234 men, 10 women
  • Berlin’s first world record was in 1977: 2:34:47 (Christa Vahlensieck)
  • In 2001, the first sub 2:20 women’s time (Naoko Takahashi) was run in Berlin
  • Nine men’s world records have been set in Berlin, last by Eliud Kipchoge in 2022; four women’s world records (including the current one from 2023)
  • Four of the top 10 men’s all-time times are from Berlin, and 13 of the top 50; but only 1 of 10 in the women’s marathon; with six of of the top 50
  • The race overall is still really male, with around 70% men/30% women in the mass field
