The women’s race at the 2025 Boston Marathon turned into a battle of patience, guts, and perfectly timed moves, and in the end, Sharon Lokedi came out on top, taking the win in a course record time of 2:17:22, which was also a personal best by around six minutes.
Early on, a big lead pack stayed together through halfway, but once the pace started to crank up near 30K, it quickly turned into a much smaller group.
Hellen Obiri, Sharon Lokedi, Amane Beriso, and Yalemzerf Yehualaw were all still in the mix deep into the race, trading leads and testing each other as the miles ticked down.

How the Race Played Out
The early miles were quick, and the group wasn’t messing around — they came through halfway ahead of course record pace. But the real race didn’t start until the hills. By the time they hit the Newton Hills, it was down to a handful of runners, and you could see the cracks starting to show.
One by one, the contenders started to fall off, until it was just a few left hammering toward Boston. It wasn’t a huge move that decided it — more like a slow grind, with Lokedi just managing the hills and then pulling away with less than two kilometers to go.
The fight for the podium was tight behind her, with second and third place all being spotted on Boylston’s finishing straight at the same time.
On a day when strategy mattered as much as raw speed, Lokedi showed exactly how to run Boston: patient early, tough late.
It capped off a dramatic day for the women’s race — and showed, once again, that you have to race Boston, not just run it.
