An 18-year-old marathon runner is in critical condition at a Gold Coast hospital after falling from the ninth floor of a Surfers Paradise apartment building on Sunday, just hours after finishing a personal-best time in the Gold Coast half-marathon.
Tyler Calleja, from Yeppoon in central Queensland, fell from the Essentia building on Remembrance Drive shortly after 4:30 a.m., according to reports from 7NEWS. A maintenance worker discovered him in the car park after he landed on a parked car.
Paramedics treated Calleja at the scene for serious head and abdominal injuries before transporting him to Gold Coast University Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
What Police Say Happened
Police believe Calleja had returned to the apartment complex where he was staying and was trying to get back inside when he fell.
“Investigations indicate the man had returned to the apartment complex and attempted to gain entry to the building,” police told 7NEWS. “It is believed the man fell while attempting to gain access to the unit where he was staying before falling into the car park area.”
Authorities have not indicated any suspicious circumstances.
A Personal Best Hours Before
Calleja competed in the Gold Coast half-marathon on Saturday and posted a personal-best time. On Instagram, he shared his result with the caption: “super stoked with that, especially considering I didn’t even get the chance to warmup.”
The post drew a string of light-hearted replies from friends before news of the fall spread. Since then, the same thread has filled with messages of support, including “sending prayers” and “Thinking of ya Mate.”
Calleja works as a coach at Fitstop and is well known in the local running community. Runners at his level typically follow a careful post-race recovery routine, which includes refueling nutrition in the hours after crossing the line.

Ran 100 Kilometres For A Friend
Earlier this year, Calleja ran 100 kilometres in 24 hours to raise money for Queensland Children’s Hospital. He took on the challenge after watching a close friend battle leukaemia.
The distance sits well beyond the marathon and lands in ultramarathon territory — a distance most runners never attempt, and one that has produced its own share of remarkable charity stories and cautionary tales.
What We Know Now
Calleja remains in critical condition. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the fall, but early findings suggest he was trying to get into his own unit when the incident occurred.
Friends, family and members of the running community have been posting messages of support online as they wait for updates on his condition.
