Attention runners: If you’ve recently snagged a faster Boston Qualifying (BQ) time, it’s time to update your details! The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) is giving runners who have already met the qualifying standard the chance to submit a faster time ahead of the 2025 Boston Marathon—and this could make all the difference in securing your bib number and seeding.
Why Updating Your Time Matters
For those unfamiliar, getting into the Boston Marathon isn’t just about meeting the qualifying standards; in recent years, you have to beat them (and sometimes by quite a lot). With limited spots available on the start line, the fastest times get priority.
Historically, runners have needed to beat their age and gender-specific qualifying standard by several minutes to guarantee entry. For 2025, the cutoff time was 6 minutes and 51 seconds faster than the qualifying standards.
So, if you’ve managed to shave off precious seconds or minutes since registering, now is the time to let the B.A.A. know.
How to Update Your Time
Updating your BQ time is straightforward. Head to the official Boston Athletic Association’s website at baa.org and submit your new information. You’ll need your updated race result details, so make sure your latest qualifying marathon is certified and falls within the eligible timeframe.
The B.A.A. will review your submission and adjust your ranking accordingly. This could significantly boost your chances of earning a coveted spot—especially if you were near the cutoff.
Current Qualifying Standards
To qualify for the 2025 Boston Marathon, runners must meet the following time standards based on their age and gender:
Age Group | Men | Women | Non-Binary |
---|---|---|---|
18-34 | 3:00:00 | 3:30:00 | 3:30:00 |
35-39 | 3:05:00 | 3:35:00 | 3:35:00 |
40-44 | 3:10:00 | 3:40:00 | 3:40:00 |
45-49 | 3:20:00 | 3:50:00 | 3:50:00 |
50-54 | 3:25:00 | 3:55:00 | 3:55:00 |
55-59 | 3:35:00 | 4:05:00 | 4:05:00 |
60-64 | 3:50:00 | 4:20:00 | 4:20:00 |
65-69 | 4:05:00 | 4:35:00 | 4:35:00 |
70-74 | 4:20:00 | 4:50:00 | 4:50:00 |
75-79 | 4:35:00 | 5:05:00 | 5:05:00 |
80 and over | 4:50:00 | 5:20:00 | 5:20:00 |
It’s worth noting that hitting the qualifying time doesn’t guarantee entry. In recent years, the “cutoff time”—how much faster you need to be than the standard—has ranged from none at all to nearly seven minutes!
