When the Bank of America Chicago Marathon takes place on October 12, one familiar spectator will be back in his usual spot along the River North stretch of the course, a five-year-old golden retriever named Benny.
Benny has spent the last two Chicago Marathons stationed near Wells and Erie, holding a sign that reads โFree Benny Pets.โ The message lets runners know they can stop for a quick boost of encouragement during one of the busiest sections of the race.

His owner, Megan Peirona, told NBC Chicago that Benny is now training for his third appearance, practicing โstaking out on Wells Streetโ and taking breaks so he can stay energized through race day. โThe biggest issue on marathon day is how tired he gets,โ Peirona said. โBut it will be a very exciting day for us.โ
The tradition started in 2023 when Peirona noticed runners slowing down to greet the golden retriever but hesitating to approach. She made a cardboard sign to signal it was welcome, and it quickly became part of the race experience.
Last year, videos posted by Peirona showed dozens of runners stopping mid-race to pet Benny. Some even said they had been looking for him throughout the course. โTons of people said he gave them the boost they needed,โ Peirona said after the 2024 marathon.
Outside of the event, Benny has gained a small online following, with more than 1,200 Instagram followers on his account, @bbbbenny_andthejets. This year, runners can expect to spot him again in River North, ready to cheer them on one tail wag at a time.
