Pharrell and Adidas Unveil $1,000 Running Shoe as Design Experiment 1

Pharrell Williams and Adidas are pushing the limits of running shoe design (and cost) with a new collaboration priced at $1,000.

The Humanrace x Adidas Evolution Pro, set to release on Jan. 24, is described by Adidas as a โ€œdesign studyโ€ based on its Pro Evo 1 marathon racing shoe, which debuted in 2023 with a then-unusual $500 price tag. Pharrellโ€™s version doubles that price, positioning the shoe less as a mass-market product and more as an experimental concept aimed at collectors and design enthusiasts.

A Concept Built on an Elite Racing Platform

The Evolution Pro draws directly from Adidasโ€™ top-tier Adizero Pro line, which has become a dominant force in elite road racing.

In 2025, Adidas shoes were worn by seven of the 12 winners across the World Marathon Majors. Four of those victories came in the Pro Evo 2, with the rest in the original Pro Evo 1. Only one other brand, On, appeared more than once on the podium.

Both the Pro Evo 1 and Pro Evo 2 weigh just 138 grams in a menโ€™s size 9.5, making them the lightest running shoes Adidas has ever produced. While the two models share the same weight, the Pro Evo 2 offers increased cushioning.

Pharrellโ€™s Evolution Pro uses that same performance foundation, including Adidasโ€™ Lightstrike Pro foam, but reworks the design in ways that push it into more conceptual territory.

Touch, Texture and a Wider Silhouette

According to Adidas, the Evolution Pro introduces โ€œtouch-reactiveโ€ elements meant to โ€œcreate a sensory experience,โ€ though the company has not detailed exactly how those features function. The idea has drawn comparisons to Nikeโ€™s recently launched Mind franchise, which uses pressure-based design elements to promote calm and focus around athletic performance.

Visually, the shoe is defined by an exaggerated, widened sole and a feather-light mono-mesh upper. A raised โ€œ5Dโ€ dot pattern appears across the upper and the Three Stripes branding, adding texture and a tactile feel. The color palette is mostly white and black, while sections of the outsole feature a blue-and-green marbled pattern meant to evoke the earth.

Despite its experimental look, the Evolution Pro remains a performance shoe at its core. It features a full-length Lightstrike Pro midsole and reinforced outsole panels, similar to Adidasโ€™ marathon racing models.

Performance Pedigree, Collector Pricing

Adidas has made clear that this release is not aimed at everyday runners. With a four-figure price and limited availability through select retailers and Adidasโ€™ own channels, the Evolution Pro is positioned as a statement piece rather than a mainstream racing option.

The company has taken a similar approach with other models derived from the Pro Evo platform. The Evo SL daily trainer, for example, borrows the geometry of the Pro Evo 1 and uses Lightstrike Pro foam, but omits the carbon fiber plate that defines a true super shoe.

The Humanrace x Adidas Evolution Pro will go on sale Jan. 24 for $1,000, marking one of the most expensive running shoes ever offered to the public and underscoring how far performance footwear has moved into the realm of design, experimentation, and cultural status.
