Tokyo Marathon organizers have revealed the finisher medal for next year’s 20th edition, and at 100 mm across it is wider than the medals the race has hung on its recent champions. The Tokyo Marathon Foundation said on Aug. 13 that every runner who gets to the finish of the March 7 race will receive it, roughly 3.9 inches in diameter and named the “Premium Edition” for the anniversary. Tokyo’s podium medals, first place through third, measured 65 mm at each of the past two editions, and the Foundation has not published a size for the 2027 winners’ medals.

The front carries a stylized 20, with the 2 standing for a runner’s route and the 0 assembled from the race’s logo pattern. The reverse shows city landmarks that sit on the course. The Foundation described the image it released as a final design draft and said some details may still change. Tokyo also counts toward the star medals collected across the major marathons, a set due to expand to nine.
Tanaka Precious Metal Group has struck the hardware for both the podium and the finish line at every edition of the race since 2007. Its recent podium medals were made in pure silver, the first place version plated from a line of fully recycled precious metals, and the ribbons are woven from recycled polyester.
The 2027 race is Tokyo’s 20th edition, though it falls in the 21st year since the first running on Feb. 18, 2007. Tokyo’s 2021 race was postponed twice during the pandemic and eventually held in March 2022, and no separate 2022 edition took place.

The medal is one item in an anniversary program that also includes a $170,000 champion’s prize, the largest in the World Marathon Majors, a field raised to 40,000 from 39,000, and a gathering space near the start line called Tokyo Marathon Square. Organizers also released the design of a runner-only ASICS shirt on Aug. 13, with purchase details due around December.
The ballot opened Friday morning and closes at 5 p.m. JST on Aug. 28. Results go out through the entry portal on Sept. 18.
