Weini Kelati, the 27-year-old Eritrean-born American long-distance runner, continues to make headlines in the running world.
Just six days after setting a new American record for the half marathon in Houston, Kelati secured another remarkable victory at the USATF Cross Country Nationals held at Pole Green Park in Richmond, Virginia.
In a dominant display of her endurance and speed, Kelati claimed the top spot on the podium in the 10-kilometer race, clocking an impressive time of 32:58.6.

Her remarkable performance comes as no surprise considering her recent achievement in the Aramco Houston Half Marathon, where she set a new American record after finishing the race with a stunning time of 1:06:25 in her debut half marathon.
Kelati’s victory at the US Cross Country Nationals not only solidified her position as a rising star in American long-distance running but also earned her a coveted spot at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Belgrade on March 30, 2024.
The Virginia event, which served as the national team selection for the upcoming World Athletics Cross Country Championships, witnessed Kelati’s strategic and powerful run, leaving her competitors trailing far behind.
She was the only runner in sight at the finish of the race, as she completed the 10k course a remarkable 37.3 seconds ahead of the runner-up, Emma Hurley.

Kelati’s cautious approach to the race, considering her recent half-marathon endeavor and battling sickness earlier in the week, adds another layer to her impressive performance. Despite the hurdles, Kelati maintained composure and executed a near-perfect race.
Reflecting on her victory, Kelati stated to Flotrack, “After the half-marathon, I didn’t know what to expect. I had something; I was really, really sick. I didn’t know if I was going to do it, but Wednesday I felt better. I wanted to go and make the team. It didn’t matter what place I get.”
This triumph marks Kelati’s first national cross-country title and her fourth national title overall, further evidence of her position as a force to be reckoned with in the American running scene.

As Kelati looks ahead to the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Belgrade, the running community eagerly anticipates her performance on the global stage.
Her ability to balance the track, the half marathon, and cross country serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes worldwide that you can be successful in more than one event.
Kelati’s resilience, dedication, and consistent achievements position her as a key figure in American long-distance running, and she will certainly be a star to keep your eyes on.
