Canadian sprint star Andre De Grasse has now matched swimmer Penny Oleksiak as Canada’s most decorated Olympian, securing his seventh career medal following a stunning anchor leg in the men’s 4x100m relay Olympic final.
On Friday at Stade de France, Canada’s men’s 4x100m relay team, consisting of Aaron Brown, Jerome Blake, Brendon Rodney, and anchored by De Grasse, delivered a thrilling performance to capture the Olympic gold medal with a time of 37.5 seconds.
South Africa and Great Britain followed in second and third place, respectively.
The United States was disqualified after a mishap during their first baton exchange.
This victory builds on the team’s silver medal from the Tokyo Games and solidifies De Grasse’s place in Canadian Olympic history with a total of two gold, two silver, and three bronze medals.
On the women’s side of the event, Team USA made up for the letdown in the men’s event, with Sha’Carri Richardson anchoring the 4x100m relay team to victory.
Team USA, consisting of Melissa Jefferson, Twanisha Terry, Gabby Thomas, and Sha’Carri Richardson, brought home the gold with a time of 41.78. Great Britain claimed silver just behind Team USA, with a time of 41.85, while Germany rounded out the podium, stopping the clock at 41.97.
