If your morning run didn’t show up on Strava, you’re not alone.
The fitness tracking platform is experiencing a major outage that is preventing users from uploading workouts, particularly through the mobile app. According to Strava’s system status page, the issue was first reported early Monday morning and continues to impact uploads as of midday.
Why it matters
Strava is the digital home base for tens of millions of runners, cyclists and triathletes. When uploads fail, entire communities of athletes lose access to performance metrics, daily logs and social feedback. In a culture where “if it’s not on Strava, did it really happen?” has become a common refrain, this disruption hits more than just servers; it hits the daily rhythm of athletes.
What’s happening
- Strava’s status dashboard currently lists a major outage for uploads, alongside partial outages for its website and API.
- Downdetector began registering a spike in reports around 7:53 a.m. GMT (2:39 a.m. ET), signaling widespread disruptions across user devices.
- Though Strava has not confirmed a cause, the timing aligns with Amazon Web Services (AWS) outages also affecting Alexa, Amazon.com, and other AWS-powered platforms.
“Investigating – We are currently investigating an issue causing a delay in uploads,” Strava’s system update read at 12:30 a.m. PDT
At the time of publication, AWS reports operational status, leaving the root cause of the Strava issue unclear.
The bigger picture
This outage lands at a sensitive time for the company. Just last week, Strava filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Garmin, claiming Garmin’s devices unlawfully use features similar to Strava’s heatmaps and segment tools.
If successful, the lawsuit could lead to Garmin being forced to disable or remove these features, potentially impacting sales of most of its GPS-enabled watches and bike computers.
Strava and Garmin have long been interdependent: a vast portion of activity uploads to Strava originate from Garmin devices. While the legal battle unfolds, both companies continue to cooperate on data sharing, despite recent friction over attribution requirements for third-party app use.
What you can do now
Until Strava resolves the outage, here’s how to upload your workouts manually:
Garmin users:
- Export the activity file from Garmin Connect as a
.gpx,.fit, or.tcx - Log into Strava on desktop
- Go to the “+” menu, select “Upload Activity” > “File”
- Locate your saved file and upload
Apple Watch users:
- Open the Strava app > You > Manage Apps and Devices > Health
- View your past 30 days of workouts
- Tap “Import” once the app resumes upload functionality
How long will it last?
Strava has not provided an ETA for a fix. The company has acknowledged the issue but hasn’t issued any timeline for resolution. Their support account continues to post updates, but upload functions remain inconsistent.
Runners, for now, will have to wait, and yes, they’re already posting memes about it.
