World Athletics released the qualification system and entry standards for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing on Tuesday. The marks are faster across most events than the ones used for last year’s championships in Tokyo.
The championships will be held from September 11 to 19, 2027, at the National Stadium. It is the second time Beijing has hosted the event, after the 2015 edition. Forty-nine events are on the program.

Tougher marathon marks
The men’s marathon standard is now 2:06:00, a 30-second cut from the time required for Tokyo 2025. The women’s standard sits at 2:23:20. Marathon standards have been tightening for years, and these are the toughest yet.
Athletes can still earn a Beijing spot through their marathon results another way. The top five finishers at Platinum Label marathons during the qualification window are considered to have met the requirement, and so are the winners of Gold Label marathons run in 2027 up to May 2.
The qualifying window for the marathon runs from November 3, 2025, to midnight on May 2, 2027. That is earlier than the windows for most track events, giving elite marathoners a longer runway to find the right race.

A shift toward the rankings
World Athletics has set the target split at roughly 40 percent of athletes qualifying through entry standards and 60 percent through world rankings, a move away from the previous 50-50 balance. The federation also adjusted how rankings are calculated, with results scores counting for more and placing scores carrying less weight. The change is intended to help athletes who have fewer chances to compete at top-tier meets.
“These standards reflect the incredible progress in our sport. We want the best athletes in Beijing, but we also want a system that rewards those who perform consistently at the highest level over the full qualification cycle,” a spokesperson for World Athletics said.

Track events tighten
The men’s 1,500m has dropped from 3:33.00 to 3:30.00. The women’s 1,500m has gone under four minutes for the first time, falling from 4:01.50 to 3:58.00.
The men’s steeplechase mark is now 8:08.00, seven seconds faster than the previous standard. The women’s steeplechase has moved from 9:18.00 to 9:06.50.
In the 5,000m, men need 12:50.00 and women need 14:36.00, down from 14:50.00 for the women. The 800m standards came down 1.5 seconds for both genders, with men needing 1:43.00 and women 1:57.50. In the 100m, men have to run 9.95 and women 10.96.

Four ways into Beijing
Athletes in individual events have four routes to a start in Beijing. The system is meant to capture both single peak performances and consistent results across the qualification period.
The four pathways are:
- Hitting the entry standard during the qualification window
- Finishing in a qualifying position at a designated competition
- Receiving a wild card
- Earning a high enough world ranking by the end of the ranking period
Wild cards will go to defending world champions from 2025, winners of the 2026 World Athletics Ultimate Championship, the 2026 World Race Walking Tour and World Combined Events Tour winners, the top hammer performers on the 2026 Continental Tour, and the 2027 Wanda Diamond League winners. Area champions in individual events, apart from the marathon, are also considered qualified, provided no other athlete from that area is already in.
The qualifying window for most track and field disciplines opens on August 23, 2026, and closes on August 22, 2027. For the 10,000m, race walks, combined events and relays, the window opens earlier, on February 23, 2026.

The end of a Boston University workaround
Indoor track performances for races of 200m and longer will no longer count for entry standards. They will still count for world rankings.
That closes the door on a route many elite athletes have used in recent years. As CITIUS MAG reported, in 2025, 5,000m world champion Cole Hocker and World Championships bronze medalist Jimmy Gressier locked in their marks at Boston University’s indoor track and did not have to chase the standard outdoors. Under the new rules, athletes will have to find their times at higher-tier outdoor meets in the spring and summer.
This change reinforces the rankings shift, since World Athletics has been steadily reshaping its championship qualification model.
